ABOUT DSSC
The aim and purpose of the Club is to provide and encourage all aspects of dinghy sailing for club members. The club is primarily aimed at current service personnel, and UK based civilians employed within the Eastern SBA, and their dependents ("Entitled" personnel). In addition, a limited number of civilians ("non-entitled" personnel) are permitted to join at the discretion of the Executive Committee. OPENING HOURS
March to November
The club is normally open for sailing according to the following schedule:
Saturdays 1000 - 1600
Sundays 1000 - 1600
Sailing of Club boats is always subject the the availability of an operational safety boat, and a volunteer crew. Although a safety boat is provided, all sailing is "at your own risk".
January & February:
January and February are work months, and with some specific exceptions there will normally be no sailing, until such time as all essential work is completed.
Privately owned boats may be sailed at any time, without safety boat cover, entirely at the owner's risk.
On all scheduled sailing days an Officer of the Day (OOD) is appointed according to a monthly roster. The OOD will be an experienced sailing member and is responsible for all sailing activities on the day, including the booking out of boats to members.
SAILING LIMITS
All members may sail when the green flag is flying, as this indicates light winds.
The blue, amber and purple flags are flown when winds are stronger and restrictions apply to less experienced sailors - see below. When the Red Flag is flying, no sailing is permitted.
In high winds, sailing is limited as follows:
Up to 12 knots, no restrictions (Green flag will be raised)
12-18 knots, Only RYA Level 2 qualified helms (Amber flag will be raised)
18 -25 knots, Only RYA Level 3 or higher qualified helms (Blue Flag will be raised)
25-28 knots, Instructors Only (Purple Flag will be raised)
Over 28 knots, No Sailing in club boats allowed (Red Flag will be raised)
As a general rule, all sailing in club boats must be conducted within sight of the club. This is the area bordered by Watson's Mole on the West side, the former Leisure Centre on the other side. There are no limits on private boats, however good sense would dictate that someone at the club is aware of where you are going and when you will be back.
ALLOCATION OF BOATS
Members wishing to sail, must request a club boat from the OOD, Assistant OOD, or Sailing Secretary and book it out in the relevant file. Any faults or defects in the boat should be logged in the same file at the end of the day. Members taking out a club boat are responsible to de-rig, wash down the hull (and if wet, the sails), cover, tie down the boat, and put away the sails (wet sails to be hung in the sail locker). (If a member takes over a boat already rigged by another member, he then takes on the de-rigging and putting away responsibility!).
